B-26G Marauder #44-68105 crashed into Vakayri mountain in Belem, Brazil Jan 25, 1945 while on ferrying flight from Atkinson Field, British Guiana to Belem, Brazil. All 5 crew killed.
Thursday, May 27 1948 Woodward News: The bodies could not be identified after their plane crashed in Brazil, Jan 25, 1945. The Cemetery here was chosen because of it central location in relation to their homes. Theodore T Handley of Woodward, Okla, was the son of M&M August Handley of Woodward. He was a pilot of a crew of five who flew a B-26 Marauder Bomber. One of a convoy of 19 planes enroute to Europe on Jan 25, 1945. They encountered a storm and their last radio message was recorded from a position halfway between British Guiana and Belem, Brazil. After 565 hours search by the U.S. government, they were given up as dead. In June 1946 the wreckage of their plane was found by natives who brought the message in to the U. S. Army station at Belem, Brazil, where a helicopter was sent out to the scene which was halfway up Mt. Tipac under a dense growth of trees. One body had been thrown clear of the wreckage and was identified as that of the engineer Sgt. Wesley Fulton of Norfolk, Neb. The other was not to be personally identified but were positively identified by their tags. They were taken to Val D Cans Field, Belem, Para, Brazil and buried with military honors in U. S Army Plot No2 beside their comrade. They were in one casket and one grave. In the fall of 1947 they were exhumed and sent to Post Cemetery, Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. They were later shipped to the United States and were buried May 7th, 1948 at Zachory Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.
The Woodward parents were unable to attend the services in Louisville since Mr. Handley was recovering in an Oklahoma City hospital from a major operation.Lt. Handley was a graduate of Woodward high school where he was a capable football player. He attended the University of Oklahoma at Norman for one year before enlisting in the Air Forces in 1942.He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Handley: four brothers, Virgil V., Woodward, Earnest, Tulsa; Raymond, Worland, Wyo.; and Fred Handley in the Navy air force stationed at Memphis, Tenn. One sister, Florence DeWalt, Anderson, Ind. and one sister, Beulah Belle who preceded him in death in 1927.
