Linguist and author. Uriel Weinreich was a professor in linguistics at Columbia University, specializing in linguistics and Yiddish. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, also. His family included his wife Beatrice Silverman Weinreich and their two children. Weinreich was the son of the linguist and founder of YIVO Institute for Jewish Research--first located in Vilnius, Lithuania, and reestablished in New York City following the Second World War--Max Weinreich and Regina Boba Weinreich. Prior to his untimely death from cancer at age 40, Uriel Weinreich authored a renowned Yiddish-English dictionary and laid the groundwork for the Language and Cultural Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry. Uriel Weinreich's publications include the following works: Modern English-Yiddish English-Yiddish Dictionary (Schocken, new paperback edition 1987); College Yiddish: An Introduction to the Yiddish Language and to Jewish Life and Culture (YIVO, New York, 1st edition 1949, 6th edition 1999); Languages in Contact: Findings and Problems. New York, 1953. Reprint, Mouton, The Hague, 1963; and Say It In Yiddish: A Phrase Book for Travelers (with Beatrice Weinreich). Dover, New York, 1958.
