Duchess of Marlborough. Born Lady Susan Stewart the daughter of John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway and Anne Dashwood. In September 1791 she married George Spencer, Marquess Blandford at St James, London. The couple had six children. As a result of her marriage, she was styled Marchioness of Blandford. When the marquess succeeded his father as Duke of Marlborough in 1817, she was styled Duchess of Marlborough and he obtained a Royal License to assume and bear an additional surname, legally changing the family name to Spencer-Churchill. As the Duke's debts mounted, the couple apparently became estranged, and when their estate at Berkshire was sold to settle his debts, he retired to Blenheim without her. She died at 73 in Mayfair, London.
