Julius Wellington McCullough, Jr., known to family and friends as June, was the third of four children born to Julius W. McCullough (1843-1883) and his wife Mary Ann Page Capps McCullough (1853-1933) of Huntington, Cabell Co., W.Va. His father was from a prominent Cabell Co. family and captained steamboats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers before health and family obligations compelled him to find work in Huntington as a grocer and later as a clerk for the C&O Railroad. June's mother was the daughter of a steamboat captain from Washington, St. Landry Parish, La.

After the early death of June's father, the family was left in straightened circumstances. June and his brothers were expected to help support their widowed mother and sister. Like his father, June took a job in the offices of the C&O Railroad in Huntington. On July 31, 1901 he married Rachel Etta Matthews (ca. 1875-1945), and the couple first settled in Huntington. They later moved to Zanesville, Ohio, where June worked as a shop foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad. No children were born to this union.
