Edward C. Kalupa, age 84, 185 Willowbrook Drive, Plymouth, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at his son's home in Grafton, after six years of cancer.

He was born October 5, 1916, in Berlin, WI, to Frank Kalupa Jr. and Laura Sweda. He moved away from home during eighth grade to work for neighborhood farmers.

Beginning at age 19, "Ed" worked in the pottery department of the Kohler Co. for over 19 years. During this period, he played a major role in the organization of Local 833 of the United Automobile Workers. Local 833 replaced the company-sponsored Kohler Workers Association, representing most hourly employees of the company. He also played a leadership role in the bitter six-year historic labor strike against the Kohler Co. during the 1950's (beginning in 1954).

At age 40, he changed careers and became a journeyman electrician by attending over six years of night school at Milwaukee Vocational School. He worked for several electrical contractors based in Milwaukee for over 10 years, including several years as a foreman, and for two electrical contractors based in Sheboygan (Specht Electric and Faber Electric) for over 14 years, doing both residential and commercial projects. During this period, he played a role in the creation of two union-sponsored pension funds for the journeyman electricians.

He was a longtime resident of Sheboygan County. In 1937, he married Annabelle Kallas in Berlin, WI, and proceeded to live in Sheboygan Falls for over 28 years with Annabelle and their four children. He then lived in Sheboygan for over 18 years. For the last 12 years, he has lived in Plymouth with his current wife, Ilene Ebenreiter, who he married March 17, 1988.

He was a longtime member of the Sheboygan County Special Deputies Association and the Sheboygan County Historical Association.

He belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church in Plymouth for several years.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and gardener.

He was a big supporter of several area wildlife and conservation banquets and causes. He was also a longtime staunch supporter of the Democratic Party.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of Plymouth; two daughters, Beverly (Frank) La Valle of Hanover Park, IL and Karen (Paul) Van Treek of Des Moines, IA; two sons, Edward J. (Sherrill) of San Dimas, CA and Anthony (Linda) of Grafton; one step-son, Dennis (Janet) Janisse of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren, Joel Hansen of Aurora, CO, Lisa Hansen of Los Angeles, CA, Cheryl (Sven) Pole of Lackspur, CA, Michael (Pam) Van Treek of Batavia, IL, Patrick Van Treek of Sacramento, CA, Daniel Van Treek of Hollywood, CA, Michele (Chris) Lukes of Little Chute, Kimberly Kalupa of Rockville, MD, and Taylor of San Dimas, CA; eight great-grandchildren, Joel Jr.., Adam and Ryan Hansen, all of Aurora, Ryan and Kobe Pole, both of Lackspur, Andrew, Kelly and Claire Van Treek, all of Batavia, IL; two sisters, Isabelle Jezwinski (he was recently able to attend a 90th birthday party for her) And Josephine Waskoviac of Berlin, WI; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Clifford and Lewis Kalupa; and one sister, Mary Kalupa.

The Rev. Dennis Van Beek will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 20, 2000, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth.

Cremation will follow services and private family inurnment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls.
