RICHARD BETTS STEPHENS was the son of THOMAS GEORGE and MARY [GOODWIN] STEPHENS and he was born on 17 September 1878 in Bradwell near Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England when his father was working at the Wolverton Railway Works. RICHARD STEPHENS went to work for the Railway as well and became an "engine fitter". He was married to MARY ELIZABETH HOFF on 25 December 1900 in Holy Trinity Church, South Shore, Blackpool, Lancashire, England and following their marriage they settled in Winterbourne, Barton, Gloucestershire, England. They became the parents of four children, three of which were born in Gloucestershire. They moved to Grimsby, Lincolnshire in early 1908 and that is where their fourth child was born.
