During many years, amid pressing cares and at great expense of time and money, Dr. Peabody pursued the labor of love which he felt worthy of his hearty service, the gathering of information and the compilation of materials for a family history. His letters reveal a man of strong, disinterested love, and great kindliness and broad sympathies. He believed that the Peabody Family was a remarkably good one in all points that go to make character and efficiency, and he did untiring, patient, persistent work to attain the end. He had got to the vicinity of the consummation; many pages were type-written, all tabulated and arranged most systematically; so that the editor's work had been as easy as could be when so many records were included and so many particulars involved.

While attending the duties of his exposition at St. Louis, he passed away suddenly, from apolexy.
