CAPTAIN, HENRY FITZHUGH was born on 15 January 1686 in Stafford County, Virginia, and was the son of William Fitzhugh (1651-1701) and Sarah Tucker (1663-?).

Henry Fitzhugh married Susanna Cooke on 24 Feb 1718 in Stafford County, Virginia. Henry & Susanna had SEVEN children (that are known of):

Henry Fitzhugh (1723-1783),
Thomas Fitzhugh (1725-1768),
John Fitzhugh (1727-1809),
William Fitzhugh (1729-1785),
Sarah Anne Fitzhugh (1729-?, twin of William),
Susanna Fitzhugh-Thornton (1732-1795), and
Elizabeth Fitzhugh (1736-?).

John Hesselius painted the portrait of Captain Henry Fitzhugh when Henry was sixty-four. It is said that although Fitzhugh had a sight impairment, he was still a man of dignity and character. Henry was impeccably groomed and dressed. His character was developed early. Henry was tutored since age three by an immigrant Frenchman, and until age eleven when he was sent to England for further education, Henry could only read and write in French. Instructions stated that Henry was to be furnished with clothing "fit & decent" rather than "rich and gaudy." Although Henry was a second son, Henry so distinguished himself as a scholar that he was willed half his father's large library. In turn he dutifully served in both county government and at Williamsburg, bringing credit to the family.

Henry passed away on 12 Dec 1758 in Stafford County, Virginia, he was originally buried at a cemetery on his Father, William Fitzhugh's, plantation estate, "Bedford," which was later relocated to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, King George County, Virginia.
