John D. Holst Chilton Times may 24, 1930

On Friday morning, May 16, John Holst passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ella Bartel at Potter, after an illness of five days with pneumonia. He was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany, July 10, 1847 and came to America with his parents when a child of 7 years, settling on a farm of timberland in the town of New Holstein where he grew to young manhood, and helped to clear the land.

In 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Goos of New Holstein and they lived for nine years on what is now known as the George Thede farm. They later moved to Chilton town where his wife died. In 1904 he was married to Mrs. Anna Pethan and two years later they took up residence in Hayton where he lived until the death of his wife on June 6, 1928, since which time he made his home with his children. He was in fairly good health until Sunday, May 11, when he was taken with pneumonia and failed rapidly until relieved by death.

He is survived by three sons, Louis and John of Chilton and George of Sheboygan, three daughters, Mrs. A. Schroeder of Chilton, Mrs. Ella Bartel of Potter and Mrs. George Smithers of Fond du Lac. He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and a brother Peter Holst of New Holstein.

Mr. Holst was a good father, neighbor and friend. Though modest and unassuming he held the respect of all who knew him. Honest and upright in his dealings, he leaves a host of friends who deeply regret his passing after a life of usefulness.

The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. A. Arpke, pastor of the Ebenezer Reformed church, officiating at a short service at the home of Mrs. Ella Bartel at Potter from which the remains were conveyed to the church in Chilton where the main service was conducted, Rev. Arpke preaching an eloquent and consoling sermon on the life of the deceased. The procession then followed the remains to the cemetery at New Holstein where a large number of friends of the deceased were present at the burial.
