Prince and Duke. Of the Bernadotte Dynasty, he was born at Drottningholm, the youngest legitimate son of King Oscar I. He was created Duke of Dalecarlia at birth. Emperor Nicholas I of Russia was his godfather and at first the boy was to be called Nicholas, but there were considerable anti-Russian protests in Sweden causing the prince to be called August instead. He was well brought up but somewhat ornery and neither appreciated cultural matters nor his royal position, preferring the company of "regular people who understood him" and exploits only of his own choosing. He traveled extensively and also spent time working with the new Red Cross movement, Stockholm fire brigades and the area's Artillery of the Islands (Skärgårdsartilleriet), where he was made Major General in 1866. While on a second German trip, two years before that, he had married Princess Teresia of Saxe-Altenburg at Düsseldorf. She was slight of stature and they had no children, the prince affectionately calling her "little Hopsy-Tootsy". Prince August was of an unassuming, modest and goodhearted nature. His ever-increasing eccentricity created a considerable amount of funny stories about him, told among a Swedish people with whom he was genuinely popular. Prince August was only 41 when he passed away in Stockholm of an "illness of the breast".
